Catlins Park Facilities

Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay are situated on the Catlins coast, about 88 kms south-east of Invercargill and 7 kms south of Waikawa.

Curio Bay is signposted from the Southern Scenic Route, which follows State Highway 92 through the Catlins from Invercargill to Balclutha.

The fossilised remains of an ancient forest is exposed at Curio Bay during low tide. It stretches about 20 kms from Curio

The Catlins has many endangered species and wildlife not found in other parts of the world.

Whether your interest is birding, observing or close-encounters of the wild kind? Department of Conservation NZ, has done a great job of providing lookouts, tracks, conservation areas and interpretive signage throughout the pristine Catlins Conservation Coastal Rainforest Park.

Check out the Yellow-Eyed Penguin, Hectors Dolphins, Bellbirds,Tuis, ‘Hooker’ Sealions, Fur Seals, Blue Penguins, Fern Birds, Mohua, wild deer and pigs in this remote part of New Zealand.

Ask the locals? The McLean Falls Holiday Park and Whistling Frog Cafe & Bar is located conveniently in the epicentre of the Catlins. Use us as your Catlins Base-Camp. Explore the spots and we’ll give you the inside scoop on what to do and where to go, so you won’t miss a thing!

"One Day, One Place "

Stay awhile

You have come all this way, to the bottom of the world. Next stop, Antarctica.

The Catlins, steeped in history and swathed in the mists of time. Old whaling stations, home to a petrified forest, cascading waterfalls and wildlife that is thriving in an uncorrupted eco environment.

So many people think of passing through the Catlins en route to other places. So many people are wrong.... The Catlins is a holiday in itself!

“TWENTY years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain

Take your time and sit awhile. Explore the Catlins one day, one place, one day at a time.
